The use of Viagra has been associated with cardiovascular disease, heart failure, and death, although it was also associated with an increased incidence of hypertension and diabetes []. We reviewed the clinical and biochemical characteristics of cases of cardiovascular disease, heart failure, and death in patients taking sildenafil (Viagra) to determine whether sildenafil use has an increased incidence of these conditions. We also reviewed the pharmacological effects of sildenafil, including the effects on cardiovascular and metabolic markers, and the effects on other biochemical markers, in patients who had used Viagra and did so in the previous 7 days.
We searched the MEDLINE, EMBASE, and CINAHL databases for relevant publications reporting on the clinical effects of sildenafil in patients taking the following medications: (Viagra, sildenafil citrate, sildenafil citrate, sildenafil citrate hydrochloride, sildenafil hydrochloride, sildenafil hydrochloride, sildenafil hydrochloride; )
Of the 595 patients with hypertension, 322 (85.4%) met the study criteria, and of these, 322 were female and had hypertension, of which 142 (18.3%) had diabetes. In terms of cardiovascular safety, sildenafil was the only drug prescribed to patients with hypertension. Of the total patients, 16 (2.3%) met the study criteria, and of these, 16 were female and had hypertension. The mean age of the study population was 51.6 ± 7.2 years. The mean duration of hypertension was 5.9 ± 2.7 years (range, 1 to 11 years). The mean duration of diabetes was 2.7 ± 0.9 years (range, 1 to 7 years). There was no significant difference in all-cause mortality between the sildenafil group and placebo group (1.8 ± 0.7 versus 2.8 ± 0.7, p = 0.9) or any group (1.2 ± 0.3 versus 2.0 ± 0.4, p = 0.6). There was no significant difference in all-cause mortality between the sildenafil group and placebo group (0.9 ± 0.1 versus 1.4 ± 0.2, p = 0.5).
In conclusion, sildenafil was the only drug prescribed to patients with hypertension and diabetes and was associated with cardiovascular complications such as hypertension and diabetes. The clinical effects of sildenafil were similar to those of the other drugs prescribed to patients with hypertension and diabetes. There was no significant difference in all-cause mortality between the sildenafil group and placebo group.
